According to a 2019 report from the Connecticut Office of Legislative Research, Connecticut currently has 30 quarries producing crushed stone and 42 quarries producing sand and gravel.
Nationwide, the demand for aggregates, including both sand and gravel and crushed stone, has been consistently strong, with forecasts predicting continued growth over the next five years.
While the 2019 pandemic caused a significant dip in overall construction and gross domestic product, much of the industry’s losses had rebounded by July 2021, driven in part by a surge in residential construction.
Looking ahead to 2022 and beyond, the Dodge report forecasts growth of over 6% in the construction industry.
Additionally, the newly passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is expected to provide a significant boost to non-residential construction, with substantial investments directed toward upgrading our nation’s infrastructure.
This includes an allocation of approximately $1.2 billion for Connecticut’s highways, transit, and bridges, marking a 32% increase over the state’s typical infrastructure budget (www.courtney.house.gov).
