About Frederick County
Frederick County is about an hour from the hearts of Baltimore and Washington, DC, an advantageous location for access to the whole of the Eastern Seaboard. Given the proximity to the Port of Baltimore and three international airports, not to mention an educated workforce, the area has become a critical hub for bioscience firms, manufacturers, and regional distributors.
Frederick County is home to Ft. Detrick and the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center, in addition to most of the nation’s biological defense programs. These have helped attract prominent bioscience companies like MedImmune and ThermoFisher to the northern tip of the Interstate 270 Technology Corridor. Significant available land is also a driver for those looking at custom builds.
Distributors keep gravitating to Frederick County, grabbing last-mile share to keep up with robust population growth over the past decade. The largest supermarket chain in the U.S., the Kroger Company, expanded its presence locally in 2022. The Cincinnati-based grocer partnered with the Ocado Group to open a high-tech fulfillment center that will serve much of the Mid-Atlantic region. Other notable tenants in the area include Costco, Aldi, and BlueLinx.
