About Winston-Salem Industrial Narrative

Winston-Salem is part of North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad, a region encompassing the Greensboro-High Point and Winston-Salem metropolitan areas. Historically, the economy here was centered around textile, tobacco, and furniture manufacturing, but the area has become the center of various industries in recent decades. The region’s robust community of colleges and universities offers a larger-than-average talent pool for diverse employers. Trade, transportation, and manufacturing continue to make up a large portion of the Piedmont Triad region’s workforce.

Just south of Winston-Salem’s core, the southern region of Forsyth County has garnered attention from distribution, logistics, and manufacturing tenants in recent years, thanks to the Triad’s central location within North Carolina. Much of the industrial activity in the area is due to its infrastructure and access to quality labor related to manufacturing. The region immediately south of Winston-Salem’s core holds one of the smaller industrial inventories but has access to Interstate 285 and the ever-growing Interstate 40.
