Costa Sur was originally developed for timeshare use. For decades, it operated primarily to host its timeshare owners and supplemented timeshare use with customary rental. Since the purchase of the resort in 2004, the timeshare component of usage has dropped; it now accounts for approximately 13% of the annual occupancy, with the balance of the inventory used as hotel inventory. There is a natural attrition that occurs with timeshare consumers as they age and travel less. Since ownership has not been in active timeshare sales for 15 years, this trend of declining use by timeshare owners is expected to continue until the end of 2030, when the usage of the remaining 1,000 (estimated) legacy/fixed-week owners is expected to expire.
