The Pacific Railway Act of 1862 was enacted to construct a railroad connecting San Francisco to Omaha. Contracts were given to the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroad to link up in Utah. Land grants were attached to the contract as follows: 20 acre parcels would be awarded, as desired, in all odd numbered sections ten miles from either side of the track. In 1863 the ten limit was increased to 20 miles on either side of the track.
