Originally from Kyiv, Ukraine, Gene immigrated to the United States at a young age and grew up in Reisterstown, Maryland. He attended Baltimore County Public Schools, played varsity soccer at Franklin High School, and graduated a year early before earning his Business degree with a concentration in Finance from Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College).
Gene began his career as a mortgage loan officer and lender, holding senior and management roles at Community Mortgage Group and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. During this time, he funded over $500 million in mortgage loan volume, giving him a deep understanding of financing, underwriting, closing costs, and contract structure—a major advantage for buyers, sellers, and investors navigating complex real estate transactions.
In 2017, Gene transitioned into Baltimore real estate, joining Keller Williams, one of the fastest-growing brokerages in the Baltimore Metro area at the time. He rose from individual agent to team leader of the #1 producing real estate team in the market before founding the Gene Dru Property Group in 2020.
