Bio
Joseph D. Russell Jr. is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Public Storage and has served as a trustee since 2019. He became President in July 2016 and assumed the CEO role on January 1, 2019. In his current position, Russell oversees all aspects of the company’s operations, strategy, and growth initiatives. Under his leadership, Public Storage has expanded its portfolio significantly and maintained a strong position as one of the largest real estate investment trusts in the self-storage sector. He has guided the company through digital transformation efforts and operational enhancements, contributing to sustained industry leadership and portfolio growth.
Prior to joining Public Storage, Russell served as President and Chief Executive Officer of PS Business Parks, Inc. from 2002 to 2016, where he managed a diversified portfolio of commercial properties and played a key role in strategic execution until its eventual sale in 2022. Earlier in his career, he spent more than a decade at Spieker Properties, Inc., an owner and operator of office and industrial properties in Northern California, where he held multiple executive roles and contributed to the company’s transition to a publicly traded REIT in 1993. Russell also serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of Nareit, reflecting his active involvement in industry leadership and policy development.
