Before starting his business career, Richard served in the British Army for ten years. He now has shareholdings and board positions in a number of businesses ranging from architecture (Foster + Partners) through advanced nuclear energy production (Femto Energy) to private equity (Future Planet Capital) and property investment(ThamesBank Properties). He is also an Advisory Partner (M&A) at a UK boutique advisory and wealth management firm. Richard is a committed philanthropist who supports and governs a number of charities which seek to make the maximum impact from their available financial resources, particularly in areas that impact the lives of young people. He is a Trustee and former Chairman of the Royal Aero Club Trust and has given over 600 bursaries to young people to help them to advance in air sports and aviation. He also Chairs the National Byway Trust which manages safe leisure cycling infrastructure in the UK, and is a Trustee of the Norman Foster Foundation (UK) which funds travelling scholarships in partnership with RIBA, architectural undergraduate bursaries at UCL, and student bursaries at The BRIT School. Richard is also a visiting lecturer at UCL, sits in the London Council of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and is Chairman of London’s In & Out Club (The Naval & Military Club). In 2024 he was awarded the Royal Aero Club Silver Medal for outstanding contribution to aviation in the UK. He was also appointed Member of the Royal Victorian Order in the 2006 New Year Honours for services to the Royal Household and the Crown Estate.
