Barber Companies is a privately held commercial real estate investment, development, and property management firm operating in Birmingham, Alabama. The company was incorporated in 1985 as a holding company for the real estate investments of George W. Barber Jr., who reinvested proceeds from the sale of Barber Dairies to Dean Foods in 1998 into income-producing commercial real estate. Operating through subsidiary entities Birmingham Realty Company and Century Management & Development Company, Barber Companies owns the Birmingham Realty Company, successor to the Elyton Land Company that founded the City of Birmingham in 1871.
The company owns and manages more than 200 commercial properties across the Birmingham metropolitan area, representing the single largest property portfolio from a single owner in the market. The portfolio includes office buildings, retail centers, industrial warehouses, service centers, shopping centers, and land developments, with property sizes ranging from 200 to 200,000 square feet. Assets are concentrated entirely within the Birmingham metropolitan area, creating geographic exposure to the Alabama market and Birmingham's economic fundamentals.
Barber Companies employs a vertically integrated operating model, performing all property management, leasing, maintenance, and landscaping functions in-house. This structure supports a long-term hold investment strategy focused on tenant retention and asset-level operational control. The firm serves more than 500 tenants, several of which have maintained relationships with the company for over 40 years. The company also owns and operates Barber Marina in Baldwin County, Alabama, and historically owned Century Plaza Mall, constructed in 1975.
