The Federal Aviation Administration was created in August 1958, replacing the Civil Aeronautics Administration. It became part of the US Department of Transportation in 1967. The FAA's major functions include regulating civil aviation to promote safety, encouraging and developing civil aeronautics, and developing air traffic control systems. The agency also oversees commercial space transportation and sets standards for airports. Through its various lines of business, the FAA works to provide safe and efficient aerospace systems.
