Maryland Department of Transportation is the statewide executive agency responsible for planning, funding, operating, and regulating Maryland’s multimodal transportation network. Established in 1971, the department consolidated several independent transport functions into a single organization to coordinate highways, transit, aviation, motor vehicle services, port operations, and toll facilities. MDOT is organized into modal administrations—the State Highway Administration, Transit Administration, Motor Vehicle Administration, Port Administration, and Aviation Administration—along with the Maryland Transportation Authority and Maryland’s participation in WMATA.
