City of Edinburgh Council is the unitary local authority responsible for administering local government across the Edinburgh council area. It delivers a broad range of statutory and discretionary services including education, social care, housing, planning and building standards, transport, roads, waste and environmental services, libraries, culture, and community safety. The current authority was formed in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, replacing the City of Edinburgh District Council and assuming city-wide responsibilities. The Council’s civic base is City Chambers on the High Street, with its headquarters functions located at Waverley Court. Governance is exercised by elected members, with strategic and operational delivery led by the Chief Executive working through directorates covering corporate services, place, education and children’s services, and health and social care. The organization collaborates with regional and national partners on priorities such as inclusive growth, net-zero transition, and city operations. City of Edinburgh Council is a public sector body and not publicly traded.
