The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is a federal executive department established on March 3, 1849, to oversee the management and conservation of public lands and natural resources. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., DOI administers programs related to Native American affairs, wildlife conservation, energy development, and historic preservation. It manages approximately one-fifth of U.S. land through agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DOI also supervises water resource projects, endangered species protection, and mineral leasing. The department employs about 70,000 people across 2,400 locations and operates with an annual budget exceeding $18 billion.
