de Sede has its origins in a small but skilled saddler's workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland. The craftsmen there committed themselves to transforming the best possible leather into seating furniture. Their years of experience and diligence enabled them to create hand-crafted leather furniture of singular quality. In 1965, the family-run business became a joint-stock company called de Sede AG, but remained faithful to their original guiding principles. The company developed rapidly from this moment onwards: top designers of international calibre were brought on board to create seating furniture, additional manufacturing facilities were opened, and an international distribution network was established. Sophisticated designs that skilfully integrate traditional and precise Swiss workmanship swiftly gained the brand an international reputation.

Since 1989, we have been passionate, even a little obsessed, about crafting quality wood, upholstered and metal pieces using old world building methods (as our name Mortise & Tenon implies) that are creative, fashion forward designs. Today the Mortise & Tenon brand is synonymous with bench-made, no assembly lines, no stapled-together production pieces. No MDF, melamine or particle board, just materials we can all understand like sustainable White Oak and Walnut and locally sourced reclaimed lumber. We began as indie wood designers in L.A.selling hand made custom pieces at the famous Rose Bowl Flea Market, Our bespoke, handcrafted furniture quickly gained a dedicated following which led to our first retail location.
